Bengal Quince (Bilva) Aegle marmelos
Otherwise known as stone apple or wood apple the Bengal Quince is a tree native to India.
Growing up to 18 meters tall, it is renowned for being able to grow where virtually no other tree can. It tolerates water-logging and arid conditions - and needs a long dry spell to produce its fruit. These take around 11 months on the tree before they are ripe.
The tree is considered sacred by Hindus and both the leaves and fruits have long been used for their nourishing qualities.
